BS 4142: 1997 Noise Tests
British Standard 4142: 1997:
'Method for Rating industrial noise affecting mixed residential and industrial areas'
A BS 4142 Noise assessment is normally requested by a Planning Officer or E.H.O (Environmental Health Officer) as part of the application process, this is due to concerns of increased noise from proposed mechanical noise:
Mechanical/Commercial Noise
- Fan Noise
- HVAC (Duct System) Noise
- Air Condenser Noise
- Generator Noise
- Kitchen Extraction Noise
- Flue Noise
- Chiller Noise
- Heat Exchanger Noise
- AHU (Air Handling Unit) Noise
Local Authorities can differ in their specific requirements and their interpretation of appropriate statutes (BS 4142: 1997), however background noise levels should be measured as broadband dB LA90, with the specific (mechanical/commercial) noise measured as an LAeq.
It is usually accepted that a 10dB excess (specific noise over background noise) will create a situation where complaints are likely. When a BS 4142 report indicates that complaints are likely, Sound Planning will formulate an appropriate noise mitigation strategy and submit this with the acoustic report.

BS 4142 Noise Assessment - Process
A class 1 (or Type 1) Sound Level Meter and environmental kit will be positioned on site.
[Sound Planning Kits include externally and internally mounted tripods]
Broadband background noise levels (LA90) will be monitored and recorded as part of the noise survey.
The specific noise (LAeq) (the new noise source) will either be measured (if already commissioned) or calculated if in the planning stage.
Specific levels are compared to background noise levels in accordance with BS 4142: 1997 or relevant local authority UDP (Unitory Development Policy).
If a noise mitigation strategy is required e.g. Acoustic Enclosure or Acoustic Barrier, Sound Planning will calculate the necessary performance.
Finally, an acoustic report will be written an issued to both the client and local authority.
